Would you like to prepare sauces with natural honey at home?

Ximo Martínez Primo

There are many ways to use honey in cooking , but one of the most delicious—and perhaps least known—is in sauces. Specifically, I'm talking about giving dishes that unique, authentic touch that only good artisanal Spanish honey can provide.

One of the combinations that never fails is honey and mustard. And yes, we know there are thousands of versions at the supermarket... but none like the one you can make at home, with healthier ingredients and good natural honey.

The famous honey mustard sauce step by step

This sauce started out as a side dish for sandwiches and meats, but it's earned its place in everyday cooking. It's that perfect balance between smooth and savory, with a touch of personality that makes you want more.

How can you make it at home?

You just need:

  •       2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  •        2 tablespoons of raw honey
  •       1 tablespoon of mild vinegar
  •       A splash of olive oil
  •       A pinch of salt

Blend everything until it has a creamy texture, and that's it. I recommend using raw honey because it gives it a creamy, more natural texture. It's perfect for salads, roasted vegetables, marinated chicken, or as a dressing for a sandwich.

Three homemade honey sauces worth trying

There are many combinations that fit with our wide variety of honeys. Here are three ideas you can easily try at home:

Yogurt, garlic and honey sauce

One of those recipes that not everyone knows, but that is surprisingly easy and delicious, is the mixture of natural yogurt, garlic, lemon, and honey. The yogurt provides creaminess, and the lemon juice gives it a fresh, light touch that balances well with the garlic and the floral touch of honey. For this sauce, I usually use rosemary or thousand-flower honey and grate the garlic very finely, almost like a paste, so that its flavor mellows with age. This sauce is great with legume salads, steamed vegetables, mild fish, or even as a dip with pita bread or crudités. It's a quick and easy side dish that takes less than ten minutes to prepare and can save you more than one dinner.

Homemade barbecue sauce with honey

Barbecue is one of those sauces that everyone has their own version of, but one thing is clear: when you add raw honey, it improves. At Miel Mayem, we like to make it with natural tomato, a little apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire or soy sauce, sweet paprika, garlic powder, and, of course, a good spoonful of honey. For this recipe, I always recommend thyme honey , because it stands up well to intense flavors. Cook everything over low heat, letting it reduce and thicken, and stirring gently. The result is a bright color, a dense texture, and a flavor somewhere between tangy, sweet, and smoky, perfect for roasted meats, burgers, ribs, or as a base for a marinade. If you prefer vegetable dishes, try it with tofu or seitan: it works just as well.

Vinaigrette with honey and lemon

Honey and lemon vinaigrette is one of those dressings that seems simple, but makes a huge difference when you use quality honey. All you need is a little lemon juice, a teaspoon of orange blossom honey —ideal for its floral and citrus notes—salt, pepper, and a good amount of extra virgin olive oil. This vinaigrette is very versatile: it goes great with green salads, cold rice or pasta dishes, fresh cheese, or even baked white fish. If you like to play with contrasts, try it with fruits like mango or pomegranate.

Prepare your sauces with Mayem Honey

Each of these sauces has its own unique style, but they all share one important thing: the result depends greatly on the honey you use. At Miel Mayem, we have more than 20 varieties of natural and raw honey that you can use to add that special touch to your homemade sauces.
